Pre-Anaesthesia Consultation

Pre-anaesthesia consultation

This compulsory consultation between the future patient and the anaesthetist must take place at least 48 hours before the scheduled date of the operation.

During this consultation, the anaesthetist will assess the compatibility of the patient’s state of health with the operation scheduled. If the patient’s pre-op assessment highlights any anomalies, the anaesthetist may request further tests before making a final decision regarding the feasibility of the operation.

The anaesthetist will also determine the type of anaesthetic, sometimes letting the patient decide when different techniques are possible, for example between a general anaesthetic and a regional anaesthetic.

Finally, during this consultation, the anaesthetist will provide the patient with information regarding the conditions, usual effects, and risks of the anaesthetic.
